Back in 1983 when the only things we had to worry about were the Falklands War, the terminal decline of our traditional industrial heartlands, mass unemployment, riots, police brutality and a Conservative government Hell bent on giving a helping hand to the people who least need a helping hand, a band made up of two kids from a working class background released a single that, for a while at least, helped ease the angst and despair.
“Club Tropicana” by Wham is the sound of hope in hopeless times.
Dreams of sun, sea and Sangria helping people whose lives have been blighted by the reckless actions of the carefree and couldn’t care less bodies in power…it’s a beautiful thing, a vision of Heaven in pop form.
Here we are nearly three decades later and all we have to worry about is the threat of a country at war with itself, the decline of centuries of democratic tradition, zero hours contracts, riots and a Conservative government Hell bent on giving a helping hand to the people who least need a helping hand a singer-songwriter from a working class background is about to release a single that, for a while at least, might help to ease the angst and despair.
Everything stays the same.
“Holiday of a Lifetime” is soaked in the sort of sun-kissed, Sunkist, escape from the humdrum shimmer, shuffle and shine that makes you think, even if only for a moment, that everything might just be alright after all.
Wah-wah guitar, a bass line so groovy that it makes James Brown at his funkiest sound like George Formby, brass that tickles your ossicles and a lyric that could be the secret diary of everyone who has to wade through the nine to five in a job they despise…
“Dreaming of a holiday…dreaming of a holiday…somewhere hot…put away a little bit every week…”
It’s all just further evidence of the fact that Mark Morriss is one of our finest songwriters…ever.
” Holiday of a Lifetime” will be available from September 13th.
